i always had my head wrapped around the idea of getting into a wonderful university and getting a good job and getting married and having a family and being able to support them but for some reason now all i want to do is travel and eat new foods and meet new people and get a tan and buy a one way ticket and not come home
This is the most relevant thing I have ever read
I wasn’t ready for that.
I don’t think anyone was ready for that.
50 Shades of Grey was originally fanfiction based on the Twilight series, which was then published as a novel (along with 2 subsequent books). It sold over 100 million copies around the world and topped best-seller lists everywhere. It’s about to be adapted into a film, set to come out early next year.
It follows a college student named Ana Steele, who enters a relationship with a man named Christian Grey and is then introduced to a bastardised and abusive parody of BDSM culture.
While the book is paraded as erotica, the relationship between Ana and Christian is far from healthy. The core mantra of the BDSM community is “safe, sane and consensual”, and 50 Shades is anything but. None of the rules of BDSM practices (which are put in place to protect those involved) are actually upheld. Christian is controlling, manipulative, abusive, takes complete advantage of Ana, ignores safe-words, ignores consent, keeps her uneducated about the sexual practices they’re taking part in, and a multitude of other terrible things. Their relationship is completely sickening and unhealthy.
Basically, “the book is a glaring glamorisation of violence against women,” as Amy Bonomi so perfectly put it.
It’s terrible enough that a book like this has been absorbed by people worldwide. Now, we have a film that is expected to be a huge box-office success, and will likely convince countless more young women that it’s okay not to have any autonomy in a relationship, that a man is allowed to control them entirely. It will also show many young men that women are theirs to play with and dominate, thus contributing to antiquated patriarchal values and rape culture.
This god dam it this
jfc thank you

HAPPY (belated) BIRTHDAY TO thegadgetfish!
I made this thing for you!
Twenty Cups of Coffee
“Can I get three medium coffees, one black, one milk, one double-double, and a café mocha?”
“Sorry, so that’s one medium black coffee - ?” She fumbles with the cash register; she’s clearly new, but she doesn’t seem flustered so much as firmly expecting her patron to back up and speak more slowly please.
“One black,” Irelia waits to see it appear on the till, “One with just milk in it,” old buttons, green angular letters on a tiny screen, and the next appears, “One with two sugars, two creams,”
“And a café mocha. All of them medium?” They make eye contact. Just a fraction of a second late the barista makes herself smile. She’ll get the hang of it, Irelia thinks. Not a people person, but learning to fake it.
“All of them medium.”
Irelia pays with a reloadable swipe card. Her teammates smirk at her when she brings the drinks to their table.
“You’re all impossible,” she tells them, quietly amused.
Studies show that women apologize more than men, often for perfectly reasonable acts like, you know, taking up space.
Movie Producers be like: “Female led movies just aren’t as successful as male led movies.”
And Angelina be like:
$170 million worldwide!
Are you seriously under the impression that movie producers have never thought female led movies will make them money?
these movies span from the beginning of cinema to today, i could find twice as many major movies with men in them from the last three years
I think y’all should read this article: “In Defens of Lara Croft’s Humanity: How a Trailer Changes Everything If Gamers Let It, maybe it will give a new perspective to all you blasphemers. Therapy isn’t a sign of weakness, for crying out loud.
